A Qualitative Inquiry on the Experiences and Suggestions of Education Experts about using ASD Student¡¯s circumscribed Special Interest at Class

Abstract
This study was intended to provide basic data for preference and strength based education model development for ASD students through focus group interviews with eleven education experts. In the focus group interviews, the participants were asked about the teaching experiences and suggestions on using ASD student¡¯s circumscribed special interest at class. The participants consisted of eight special education teachers and three speech pathologist. The scripts of focus group interview were analyzed and four main themes and fifteen sub-themes were derived. The main themes derived were 1) the participants' concept and perception about the ASD students' circumscribed special interest, 2) experiences and outcomes using circumscribed special interest at class, 3) elements necessary for using the special interest at class, 4) suggestions on using special interests at class and diverse educational situation. Also, fifteen sub-themes were made under these four main themes. Based on these results, teaching method using preferences and strengths for autism spectrum disorders student and implications were discussed.
